This is a bathroom.  It is basically a concrete platform cantilevered out from a hillside with cutouts so the waste drops down to the ground beneath it. It is in Tibet, fairly close to North Face Base Camp.  That means that it’s windy and the wind swirls up through the cutouts.

Here are the obvious challenges with this “bathroom:”

  • No privacy (this photo is basically from the entrance).
  • Requires very deep squat in order to “hit” the gap rather than one’s shoes.
  • Swirling wind makes deep squat even more important than normal and peeing on one’s shoes substantially more likely than normal.
